Starting September 10, McDonald’s will introduce significant changes to its beloved McFlurry dessert. The fast-food chain will replace the traditional plastic dome lid with a new cardboard cup featuring four flaps to cover the top.
This update follows McDonald’s previous decision to eliminate the hollow plastic spoon used for mixing toppings. The changes are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. McDonald’s has faced criticism for its role in plastic pollution, particularly regarding plastic straws, which contribute to ocean contamination and harm marine life.
In 2018, McDonald’s set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its restaurants and offices by 36% between 2015 and 2030. By 2021, the company began replacing some plastic Happy Meal toys with 3-D paper toys that customers can assemble themselves.
This year, McDonald’s removed the plastic spoon from the McFlurry, which also served as a spindle for mixing toppings. It has been replaced with a reusable spindle that is cleaned after each use, along with a smaller black spoon that uses less plastic.
Additionally, McDonald’s will launch a Mini McFlurry, a smaller serving size for customers seeking a lighter dessert or a more affordable option. These will also be served in the new cardboard cups.
These menu changes come as McDonald’s faces declining sales.
Customers are dining out less frequently and spending less when they do, leading to a slowdown in fast food sales and reduced restaurant traffic.
In June, McDonald’s introduced a “$5 Meal Deal,” initially intended for one month but extended due to its popularity. By adding more value-oriented items like the Mini McFlurry, McDonald’s hopes to rebrand itself as a provider of affordable meal options.
During a recent earnings call, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski acknowledged that the company’s value leadership gap has narrowed and emphasized their commitment to delivering reliable, everyday value.
