Whataburger is testing a new payment option that allows customers to pay using facial recognition. This pilot program, powered by a partnership between J.P. Morgan and PopID, is now available at select Whataburger locations.
The biometric payment system by PopID lets customers pay by scanning their face or palm instead of using traditional payment methods like phones or wallets. This technology is currently being tested at four Whataburger locations in College Station, Texas:
Whataburger No. 1011, 4471 State Highway 6 Frontage Road
Whataburger No. 808, 1745 Rock Prairie Road
Whataburger No. 1135, 1451 Wellborn Road
Whataburger No. 78, 105 Dominik Drive
J.P. Morgan’s news release highlights that Whataburger has reported faster checkout times and increased customer engagement due to this new payment method. The company plans to expand the use of face payments based on these positive results.
Jerry Phillips, Vice President of Technology at Whataburger, emphasized the benefits of biometric payments. “We are excited to embrace this technology to revolutionize how our customers pay for their food. This innovation offers a faster, safer, and seamless checkout experience,” Phillips said.
Setting Up Face Payments
To use the biometric payment option, customers need to create an account with PopID, not directly through the Whataburger app. Interested users should visit PopID’s sign-up page to register. The process involves entering personal information and taking a photo, which is then encrypted and stored securely.
When checking out at participating locations, customers’ facial scans are matched with the stored template to verify their identity before completing the transaction. Customers can choose to opt in or out of this service at any time.
PopID claims its facial recognition technology provides a secure and convenient payment method, ensuring customer identification and payment authentication are both reliable and efficient.
