You can now pay for your meal at Whataburger using just your face.
Whataburger has rolled out a new biometric payment system at select restaurant locations, allowing customers to complete their purchases without the need for a purse, wallet, or even a phone. This pay-by-face feature is made possible through PopID’s facial verification system and may soon be available at more locations, according to a press release from J.P. Morgan Payments. The company is expanding its partnership with PopID to further enhance the dining experience.
“We are thrilled to continue adopting biometric payments to revolutionize the way our customers purchase their favorite food, ensuring reliability and security,” said Jerry Phillips, Vice President of Technology at Whataburger. “Innovation is at the core of Whataburger, and this step forward allows us to offer a faster, safer, and more seamless checkout experience for our valued guests, supported by the stability of a well-established financial institution.”
According to J.P. Morgan Payments, Whataburger has already observed positive results, including quicker checkout times and increased customer loyalty at both the counter and self-ordering kiosks, thanks to the implementation of biometric payments.
To utilize this new technology, customers must first enroll by taking a photo of their face, which is then converted into a secure template and stored in the PopID cloud. When making a purchase, the customer’s face is scanned and matched with the stored template. Once enrolled, customers can pay by simply scanning their face at any participating merchant in the pilot program. Additionally, customers can opt out of the service at any time.
Currently, four Whataburger restaurants in the College Station area and one near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, accept pay-by-face technology. KSAT has reached out to Whataburger for information on additional locations that may soon offer this payment option but has not yet received a response.
