Liberty Woman Marks 100th Birthday Celebration at Whataburger

by Nick

On a heartwarming note, Bobbie Waugh, a resident of Liberty, joyously celebrated her 100th birthday at her beloved dining spot, Liberty Whataburger, surrounded by a circle of friends and well-wishers. This annual tradition, fondly known as Mrs. Bobbie’s celebration, showcases her deep affection for this iconic burger joint.

The history of Bobbie’s birthday gatherings at Whataburger runs deep. This year, as she achieved the remarkable milestone of a century, she once again found herself in the midst of cherished friends and family at Whataburger, relishing her favorite meal – a Whataburger Junior “all the way,” sans cheese. The event not only marked her extraordinary age but also underscored the strong bonds she has forged within both the community and the restaurant’s staff.

Darwin Davis, the marketing coordinator for BurgerWorks, the franchise owner overseeing Liberty Whataburger and ten other locations, alongside the Whataburger team, expressed their delight in hosting Bobbie’s centennial celebration. Davis, who couldn’t attend due to prior commitments, highlighted how this tradition had begun approximately six years ago, evolving into a close friendship with Bobbie for him and many others at Whataburger. Bobbie’s weekly visits to the Liberty store are eagerly awaited by staff and patrons alike, as her presence brings joy and brightness to everyone’s day.

Bobbie, a lifelong resident of Liberty, is the only child of the late Joseph Milton “J.W.” and Madeline Rich of Liberty. Her parents’ ties to the community run deep, with her father having been the board president of First State Bank of Liberty and their ownership of a ranch in Devers. Bobbie, who proudly claims the title of the last surviving member of the Liberty High School Class of 1936, also dedicated years to teaching Sunday School at First Methodist Church.

In her current stage of life, where she no longer drives, Bobbie relies on the kindness of her close friends, notably Ellis Pickett from Liberty. Pickett’s regular Tuesday visits for errands and grocery runs have become a staple in Bobbie’s routine, with occasional scenic drives through the area adding to their cherished moments together.

The tradition of weekly lunches at Whataburger dates back to Bobbie’s gatherings with friends, initially meeting on Mondays for Mahjong sessions in the hospitality room at First Liberty Bank.

The birthday celebrations, orchestrated with the support of Whataburger providing the birthday cake, hold a special place in Bobbie’s heart. Her fondness for the restaurant transcends mere meals, encompassing the camaraderie and memories woven into its fabric. Bobbie expresses her anticipation for Monday lunches with friends Ellis Pickett and Suzanne Haberle, valuing them as highly as any other occasion.

“It’s something I eagerly anticipate every week, even more than Christmas,” she shared warmly.
