Following a legal dispute over hygiene standards, McDonald’s stores across Sri Lanka ceased operations on Sunday. The closure, mandated by the Commercial High Court of Colombo until April 4, was initiated after McDonald’s accused its local franchise holder, Abans, of failing to uphold international hygiene norms.
During a court hearing, McDonald’s representatives disclosed the termination of the franchise agreement with Abans. The legal proceedings are scheduled to resume in early April. Neither McDonald’s nor Abans have provided immediate comments on the matter.
The closure notices posted outside McDonald’s outlets indicate indefinite closure without specifying a reopening date. This development follows the recent disruption caused by a technological glitch affecting ordering systems across several East Asian stores.
