Wendy’s First Kitchen launched a new burger in Japan on March 27, which has quickly become the talk of the town. Created to mark the upcoming Osaka Expo on April 13, this limited-edition burger features a surprising ingredient: takoyaki, the deep-fried octopus balls famous in Osaka.
The burger, labeled under the modest title “Osaka Tasty Food” on the menu, didn’t receive much attention in terms of promotion. Nonetheless, it intrigued food lovers, including Mr. Sato, who was eager to try it. He ordered the burger as part of a set, which included medium fries and a drink for 1,250 yen. The set continued the Osaka theme, with fries sprinkled with takoyaki-flavored seasoning, and a drink of Tapioca Mix Juice, which was an extra 330 yen.
It was a hot day when Mr. Sato visited, and he first tried the drink. Having experienced the drink in Osaka before, he was pleased to find it tasted authentic—creamy with notes of banana, apple, peach, and orange. As for the fries, they offered a bold surprise with seasoning that perfectly mimicked the flavor of takoyaki. The mayo that usually tops the octopus balls was also noticeable, adding an extra layer of authenticity. The crispy fries paired well with the seasoning, making for an exciting flavor combination.
With the drink and fries impressing him, Mr. Sato eagerly anticipated the burger. Upon unwrapping it, he found three takoyaki sitting on top of the patty, almost playfully nestled in a burger, where they seemed out of place. Despite the odd combination, the flavor was spot on. The octopus balls balanced perfectly with the beef patty, allowing the taste of the takoyaki to shine through. The texture of the takoyaki, filled with octopus, was satisfying both in taste and mouthfeel, and the novelty of eating them in a burger format never wore off.
Impressed by the Takoyaki Burger, Mr. Sato vowed to return for another taste before it leaves the menu. The burger is available only at select Wendy’s stores for a limited time, until mid-May. If you’re in Japan and want to try this unique creation, don’t wait too long—it might soon be gone, just like the now-forgotten convenience store takoyaki ice cream.
