Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk — An American fast food chain and a popular supermarket have signed leases to open new stores in west Suffolk.
Wendy’s will launch its first drive-thru restaurant in Suffolk, alongside an Aldi supermarket, at the former recycling site on Rougham Hill in Bury St Edmunds. West Suffolk Council confirmed that both businesses have secured lease agreements for two new buildings, which are expected to be constructed in the coming years, pending planning approval and cost assessments.
Roland Stanley, real estate director at Aldi, emphasized the importance of the development. “This is a key project for Bury St Edmunds. Our new store will provide residents with easier access to affordable, high-quality groceries, create local jobs, and contribute to the area’s economic growth,” Stanley said. “Exchanging contracts is an important step, and we look forward to continuing to work with the council and community to move the project forward.”
Cllr Diane Hind, the cabinet member for resources at West Suffolk Council, expressed her excitement about the redevelopment. “For many drivers, this site is one of the first they see as they approach Bury St Edmunds off junction 44 of the A14,” she said. “This redevelopment is a great opportunity, in line with our commitment to sustainable growth, to improve the appearance of this crucial gateway into the town. I’m pleased to announce Aldi and Wendy’s as our chosen tenants.”
Carl Morris, managing director of Blank Table Ltd, the franchisee for Wendy’s in the East of England, shared his enthusiasm for the new location. “We are excited to bring Wendy’s to Suffolk as part of this redevelopment in Bury St Edmunds,” Morris said. “Opening our first drive-thru in the region is a significant milestone in our expansion plans across the UK, delivering fresh, high-quality food, and creating valuable jobs in the local community.”
He also highlighted the strategic location near the A14. “This location offers a fantastic opportunity to serve both the residents of West Suffolk and commuters, while supporting the area’s economic growth. We’re proud to be part of this project and look forward to collaborating with the council and community to bring Wendy’s unique experience to life.”
A public consultation will be held by West Suffolk Council, running from Wednesday, March 26 to Wednesday, April 16.
