Whataburger to Open First Locations in North Carolina This Summer

by Nick

Whataburger, a popular Texas-based fast-food chain, is preparing to open its first locations in North Carolina this summer.

The chain’s expansion into the state will bring several new restaurants to various cities, although Raleigh residents will have to wait a bit longer.

The first North Carolina locations will open in Gastonia, Hickory, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem, all with targeted opening dates by late summer. The Archdale and High Point locations are expected to open in the fall. Raleigh, however, will see its first Whataburger in 2026, with the planned site at 6305 Falls of Neuse Road, the former location of PDQ.

In addition to these new locations, Whataburger is reportedly taking over PDQ’s old spots in Cary (9205 Winston Hill) and Durham (3301 Watkins Rd).

To give locals a taste of what’s to come, Whataburger set up a food truck at Halifax Mall in downtown Raleigh on Monday for a private preview event. Attendees had the opportunity to sample the classic Whataburger with cheese.

It’s important to note that Whataburger is not affiliated with the North Carolina-based chain “What-A-Burger,” which operates restaurants in Kannapolis and Concord.
