Japan is home to many fast food chains, but smaller brands often need to be creative to stand out. Lotteria Japan is doing just that with the launch of its new Okonomiyaki Burger.
The name “Okonomiyaki” translates to “how-you-like grill,” referring to its savory pancake-like batter, which is typically filled with a variety of vegetables and/or meat. Originally from Osaka, Okonomiyaki remains a beloved regional specialty, and its popularity has spread across the entire country.
Lotteria’s Okonomiyaki Burger brings the essence of this dish into a fast food format. The burger features shredded cabbage and pickled ginger at the bottom, a meat patty and egg on top, and a combination of okonomiyaki sauce, mayonnaise, and bonito flakes for a burst of distinct flavors.
What makes this burger stand out, however, is the replacement of traditional buns with savory okonomiyaki pancakes, creating a fresh twist on Osaka’s popular comfort food.
While major chains like McDonald’s have tried to create their own versions of okonomiyaki-inspired burgers, none have swapped buns for pancakes. This innovative creation is sure to capture the attention of customers seeking something new.
However, there’s a catch: the Okonomiyaki Burger is currently available only in Osaka Prefecture, with 28 Lotteria and Zetteria stores offering it for a limited time starting May 10. For those outside the area, the only alternative is Wendy’s new Takoyaki Burger, a competitor’s take on Osaka-style food.
This limited-time offering is a bold move by Lotteria, but it also means that many customers will have to wait until the burger is made available more widely, or settle for other options.
