Boparan Restaurant Group (BRG) is planning an ambitious expansion of the Californian burger brand Carl’s Jr. in the UK.
The group aims to open at least 100 sites across the country within the next four years. This follows the signing of a master license agreement for Carl’s Jr. in the UK last year.
The first Carl’s Jr. restaurant in the UK is set to open at St David’s shopping centre in Cardiff, Wales, in April. BRG is already building a pipeline for further openings, with plans to launch a second location in the south of England before the summer.
David Moffat, country manager for Carl’s Jr. UK, outlined the group’s strategy, stating, “We’re looking at a sturdy rollout with a target of 100 restaurants plus in four years.” Carl’s Jr., founded in 1941, operates over 3,600 restaurants globally, making it one of the most popular quick-service chains worldwide.
BRG has a proven track record of growing US brands in the UK, having successfully expanded Slim Chickens since its introduction in 2018. The group plans to open both corporate and franchised Carl’s Jr. stores, with interest already shown by major franchisees. The UK launch menu will feature signature Angus burgers, hand-breaded chicken tenders, and ice cream shakes, with a focus on core products to ensure broad appeal. The menu will also include halal options by removing bacon from chicken burgers.
This expansion marks a significant move for Carl’s Jr. into the UK market, following other North American brands like Five Guys and Shake Shack. The brand’s global expansion plans are accelerating, with a strong presence already established in Europe.
