Wendy’s, the renowned American fast food chain, is preparing to open its first restaurant in Southampton, according to a planning application and job posting.
The new location will be situated on the ground floor of the vacant property at 17 Above Bar Street. Previously, the space housed John Anthony and is located next to Specsavers and Boots.
Famous for its square burgers that extend beyond the bun and its signature ‘Frosty’ dessert— a frozen treat similar to a milkshake mixed with whipped ice cream— Wendy’s has been serving quality burgers since 1969. Currently, the brand operates just one other outlet in Hampshire, located in Portsmouth.
Wendy’s made its UK comeback in June 2021 with the opening of a store in Reading. The company cited a “gap in the category” for fresh, affordable burgers.
As preparations for the Southampton restaurant progress, the chain has begun seeking a general manager for the new location, with a job listing posted on LinkedIn.
The building’s existing white shopfront will be replaced by a dark grey, metal-framed entrance, complete with red beams and automatic glass doors. Additionally, Wendy’s plans to install an electronic sign in the window.
The nearby Shanghai Bay restaurant, located on the first floor of the building, will remain unaffected by the new burger outlet.
