Wendy’s, the popular US-based fast-food chain famous for its square beef patties, is set to open a new restaurant near Blackpool Tower. The fast-food giant has chosen the site of the former Viva Vegas Diner, located close to the iconic landmark.
The new location will be operated by The Papas Group, which already runs Papas Fish and Chips, located just across Church Street. This will mark Wendy’s second branch in Lancashire, following the upcoming launch of its first restaurant in Preston, near McDonald’s on Friargate. While the exact date for the Preston opening has not yet been confirmed, the company’s website hints that it is “opening soon.”
Although no official date has been set for the Blackpool restaurant, Wendy’s has already begun recruiting staff, posting a job advertisement for a ‘general restaurant manager.’ The company stated that each of its typical locations employs between 30 and 50 people. Notably, Wendy’s has committed to avoiding zero-hours contracts, a common criticism in the fast-food industry.
Outside Lancashire, the only other Wendy’s restaurant in the North West is located in Kirkby, Merseyside, which opened in July 2023.
Founded in 1969 by Dave Thomas in Columbus, Ohio, Wendy’s quickly became known for its fresh, square-shaped beef patties and high-quality ingredients. The brand is also famous for its Frosty desserts. Wendy’s previously operated in the UK between 1980-1986 and 1992-2000. In October 2019, the chain announced its return to the UK, with plans to expand to 400 locations across the country.
