Sugar Grove commuters can look forward to a new drive-through Starbucks this fall as construction of the town’s first stand-alone store nears completion.
Located at 421 N. Sugar Grove Parkway, this Starbucks will mark the brand’s first standalone store in the village. Situated at the northeast corner of Route 47 and Galena Boulevard, the site is part of a shopping center between a Shell gas station and AutoZone.
The 1.42-acre lot, currently vacant, will feature a 6,000-square-foot building with a drive-through lane and a 370-square-foot outdoor patio. The Starbucks location itself will occupy approximately 2,500 square feet, while the remaining 3,500 square feet will be leased to another retailer.
The development is managed by GMX Real Estate Group, a Northbrook-based firm with two decades of experience in commercial retail projects. Todd Smutz, GMX’s director of development, highlighted the company’s extensive work with national brands like Chipotle, Sleep Number, and Raising Cane’s. GMX has also developed about a dozen Starbucks locations in the Midwest, including a recent project in Waukegan.
Though the nearby Jewel-Osco grocery store already houses a Starbucks kiosk, Smutz explained that standalone stores typically serve a different customer base. While the grocery store Starbucks mainly caters to daytime shoppers, the new drive-through location will serve morning commuters and those seeking a café environment to work or study. The standalone Starbucks will also feature a more diverse menu than the kiosk inside the grocery store.
Construction on the development is expected to be completed by June. Afterward, Starbucks will take over the site to build the interior, with plans for the coffee shop to open by mid-September.
Village Economic Development Director Michael Cassa expressed optimism about the new Starbucks location, noting that Sugar Grove is poised for significant growth, with several large residential developments in the pipeline. This growth makes the village an appealing destination for restaurants and retailers like Starbucks.
