Masala Kitchen and Carter’s Pizza and Beer have recently opened new franchises in University City, expanding their presence in Philadelphia.
Masala Kitchen, founded in 2013, is already a well-known name in Philadelphia’s food scene with locations in Rittenhouse Square and Midtown Village. The restaurant’s goal is to bring authentic Indian cuisine to the U.S., offering a range of fast-casual dishes like biryani, platters, kati rolls, and Indian yogurt drinks.
The new University City location is situated at 34th and Sansom Streets. It will be open daily, with hours from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, extended hours until midnight on Fridays, and 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturdays. Sunday hours are from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Masala Kitchen had announced its plans for this University City branch in late 2023, aiming to cater to students who couldn’t easily visit its other locations. “We have many customers from University City, but they’re students and can’t come every day,” owner Vaishal Soni told Philadelphia Today. The opening, initially set for spring 2024, was postponed to September but officially opened its doors on December 30. In addition to dine-in, the location also offers online ordering, delivery, and catering.
Meanwhile, Carter’s Pizza and Beer has opened a new location at Hamilton Court, located at 39th and Chestnut Streets.
While the restaurant’s focus is on pizza, it offers a wide variety of American and Philly favorites, including cheesesteaks, hoagies, salads, chicken wings, onion rings, and smash burgers. The menu also features creative takes on familiar dishes, such as bacon ranch fries and steak pizza, as well as fusion options like Korean bulgogi cheesesteak and Korean bulgogi fries.
Carter’s is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, and has partnered with Slice, an online ordering and delivery platform for independent pizzerias. The restaurant also hosts free trivia nights every Saturday at 6 p.m.
