A recent survey conducted by Delish, a popular foodie site known for its recipes, has ranked the healthiest hamburgers from major fast food chains in North America. The survey, carried out with the help of registered dietitian and nutritionist Lauren Manaker, evaluated the nutritional content of burgers from 15 well-known chains. The goal was to identify the seven healthiest options, with a focus on sodium and saturated fat levels, which can contribute to heart disease and high cholesterol.
The findings may come as a surprise, as the top three healthiest burgers come from the three largest fast food chains. In third place was McDonald’s Classic Burger, a simple choice featuring an all-beef patty seasoned with salt and pepper, topped with pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard. This burger contains 250 calories, 30 grams of carbohydrates, 13 grams of protein, 3.5 grams of saturated fat, and 510 milligrams of sodium.
Burger King’s Whopper Jr. earned second place. Described as offering the “same big Whopper taste but in a regular size,” this burger includes tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, onions, and mayo. It is slightly healthier than McDonald’s burger, with 310 calories, 28 grams of carbohydrates, 15.2 grams of protein, and 5.5 grams of saturated fat. It also contains the lowest sodium content of all the burgers in the study at 390 milligrams.
The top spot went to Wendy’s Jr. Hamburger, which doesn’t include cheese. While this burger has a slightly higher sodium content at 440 milligrams and a bit less protein at 15 grams, it secured the number one position due to its lower calorie count (280), fewer carbohydrates (25 grams), and reduced saturated fat (4 grams).
The rest of the list featured regional chains like In-N-Out Burger, Whataburger, Culver’s, and Shake Shack. Shake Shack’s classic hamburger was noted for its high protein content (25 grams) but also had significantly more sodium (850 milligrams) than the other options.
Three of the seven healthiest burgers were “Junior” versions of larger offerings, reinforcing the idea that smaller burgers tend to be healthier choices.
