Whataburger is bringing its signature burgers to North Carolina, with the first location set to open later this year. The fast-food chain, known for its Texas-sized burgers, is already a favorite across 16 states. Founded in 1950 by Harmon Dobson and headquartered in San Antonio, Whataburger is celebrating 75 years of serving fresh burgers, seasonal items, and signature sauces in 2025.
North Carolina will soon be added to the growing list of states with Whataburger locations. The company has broken ground on several new restaurants in the state, with plans to open at least seven by 2025. Four of these locations will be in the Piedmont Triad region, including Gastonia, Charlotte, Hickory, Indian Land, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point, and Archdale. There are also plans to expand into Raleigh, as company leaders meet with local officials to prepare for the launch.
The first Whataburger in North Carolina is expected to open in Gastonia, a city in the southern part of the state. It could open as soon as late spring 2025, according to Whataburger CEO Debbie Stroud, who started in the role at the beginning of the year.
The new North Carolina locations will feature modern amenities, including curbside ordering and double drive-thru lanes.
Each restaurant will remain open 24/7 and offer breakfast from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m., ensuring that customers experience the same quality and service that Whataburger is known for.
Stroud explained that the company has been carefully selecting locations for its expansion. “We’ve been looking for the right real estate as we chart our path through South Carolina and into North Carolina,” she said. “This part of the country is growing rapidly, and we’re excited about the opportunity.”
Whataburger has been selective in its expansion, receiving numerous requests from across the nation. As Stroud put it, “We’re intentional about the pace and the places we choose to grow.”
