Chick-fil-A has confirmed plans to open a new location in Bozeman, marking the end of months of speculation. The popular fast food chain is currently in the early stages of development, with the new restaurant proposed for the site of a former rest area off Interstate 90 and North 19th Avenue. This information comes from a site plan application submitted to the city in December.
“While we are still early in the process, Chick-fil-A is excited to announce our efforts to open a new location in Bozeman,” the company said in a statement. “We look forward to working with the City of Bozeman on the approval process and are eager to become part of this community.”
The new location would complement the existing Chick-fil-A at Montana State University’s Strand Union Building, which opened in 2024.
The Bozeman site became available after the Montana Department of Transportation closed the rest stop there in 2023 due to deteriorating conditions. In a deal with local developer Craig Rickert, the state agreed to relocate the rest area to Three Forks, near U.S. Highway 287, in exchange for the Bozeman property. Rickert also agreed to cover the cost difference between building the new rest area and the $3.8 million value of the Bozeman land.
The Bozeman City Commission approved the rezoning of the site from industrial to commercial zoning in September, making way for development. The project is planned in two phases: the first phase will include the Chick-fil-A on the eastern side of the site, while a hotel will be built on the western portion in phase two.
Both the master site plan for the entire property and the Chick-fil-A site plan are under review by the city, but no timeline for approval has been set. Once the review is complete, city staff will determine if the proposal meets necessary standards before moving forward with public notice and potential approval.
