Whataburger Expands into North Carolina with Multiple Locations

by Nick

Whataburger, the Texas-based burger chain, is continuing its nationwide expansion by venturing into North Carolina. The company, which already operates in 16 states, including 10 locations in South Carolina, is planning to open several new restaurants across the Tar Heel State.

Sources in North Carolina have reported that Whataburger is aiming to open at least seven locations, with the first one slated for Gastonia later this year. The chain’s expansion into North Carolina marks a significant step outside its home base of Texas, where most of its restaurants are concentrated.

Debbie Stroud, the newly appointed CEO of Whataburger in 2024, discussed the company’s growth strategy in an interview with Axios Charlotte. “We just started to chart a development path that comes up I-85 through South Carolina and into North Carolina,” Stroud said. “It’s an attractive part of the country. We’ve got flourishing growth and cities.”

The new North Carolina locations will mirror the chain’s popular Texas restaurants, offering 24-hour service. Additionally, the new stores will feature modernized designs, extended drive-thru lanes, and curbside ordering, enhancing the customer experience.

In 2024, Whataburger also opened its first location on the Las Vegas Strip, marking another milestone as the company celebrates 75 years of serving burgers, fries, and shakes.
