A new McDonald’s restaurant, which could create up to 120 jobs, is set to be reviewed for approval in Caterham. The proposed location at the Quadrant Road shopping centre would become the 15th McDonald’s in Surrey.
The plans have drawn mixed reactions from local residents. Some are supportive, believing the restaurant could bring valuable investment, attract visitors, and offer an additional social space. However, others argue that the town is not large enough to support another fast-food outlet and fear it could have a negative impact on the area.
Tandridge District Council is scheduled to vote on the proposal at a meeting on Thursday, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The new restaurant would feature a modern dining area designed to accommodate up to 60 people, with a variety of seating options. It would also include a kitchen, staff areas, toilets, and storage. A dedicated queuing space for customers to place orders would be part of the layout.
The planning application has generated over 400 comments, with public opinion split roughly 50-50 in favor and against the development.
If approved, the restaurant would operate daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The applicant has assured that measures will be taken to minimize noise and disturbances, including training shift managers in conflict resolution to handle potential issues such as noise and anti-social behavior.
A McDonald’s representative emphasized in planning documents that the project represents a significant investment, promising both short- and long-term job creation and economic benefits for the local community.
Currently, the nearest McDonald’s to Caterham is located in Redhill, Croydon, Purley, or at the M25 Clacket Lane services.
