McDonald’s Singapore will introduce a charge for additional condiment packets starting January 2, 2024, the fast-food chain has announced.
Under the new policy, customers will pay 0.50 Singapore dollars (approximately US$0.37) per packet for sauces such as BBQ, Curry, and Honey Mustard. Salad dressings, including Japanese Roasted Sesame, will be priced at 0.70 Singapore dollars per packet.
However, ketchup and garlic chili sauce, two popular options, will remain free but only available in fixed portions with each food order, according to McDonald’s Singapore’s website.
The company explained that the move aims to “help manage food waste and rising food costs,” which it described as ongoing challenges in the food and beverage industry.
While McDonald’s has occasionally charged for extra condiments in the past, the policy has not always been consistently enforced, local media reported. A staff member at a McDonald’s outlet in central Singapore confirmed that customers could still request extra sauces for free, but the charge will take effect in the new year. Ketchup and garlic chili sauce will continue to be available at self-service dispensers in stores.
To notify customers, McDonald’s has posted a sign at the counter that reads, “LOVE OUR DIPS? GET MORE FOR JUST 50¢ EACH,” along with a QR code linking to further details about the policy.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions. Some customers expressed frustration, pointing to McDonald’s already high prices. In response, the company has added a feedback section to its website to address concerns from dissatisfied customers.
“We seek our customers’ understanding and hope they will continue to enjoy the food and sauces they love,” McDonald’s Singapore said in a statement.
