China’s Pizza Hut franchise has introduced a unique menu item: a pizza topped with deep-fried frogs. This limited-time offering has garnered attention, thanks to a post by David Henke, a global food trendwatcher, who shared an image of the pizza on X/Twitter. He noted that this creation reflects the diverse protein preferences found in different cultures.
The pizza features a thick crust with a red sauce base and is topped with a whole fried bullfrog, garnished with parsley. To add a whimsical touch, two halves of hard-boiled egg serve as the frog’s “eyes,” accompanied by black olives.
Details about how long this protein-packed pizza will be available are unclear, as Pizza Hut has not specified this on its website. According to the Korean news outlet Maeil Business Newspaper, this pizza is part of a collaboration with Dungeons and Dragons and is named “Goblin Pizza,” inspired by one of the game’s characters.
Reactions on social media have been mixed. One Reddit user humorously remarked, “This pizza is a felony,” while another questioned, “Why ruin a pizza like that?” Some users expressed curiosity about the taste, suggesting that shredded frog leg meat might be a better addition. One commenter even stated, “I’m more upset about the olives.”
Pizza Hut is not alone in experimenting with unconventional food pairings in Asia. In 2020, McDonald’s in China introduced a sandwich featuring Spam and Oreo crumbs topped with burger sauce. Similarly, in 2022, Domino’s Pizza Japan offered a Crispy Fish and Chipa Pizza, which included fried fish, potato slices, and various sauces.
