Wendy’s, the American fast-food chain, is preparing to open its first location in Scotland, specifically in Glasgow city center.
The Glasgow City Council has received a planning application from Wendy’s for a branch at 139 Sauchiehall Street.
The application includes nine documents detailing plans for the restaurant, which will feature Wendy’s signage on the entrance doors of the historic B-listed building. Additionally, a 70-inch Samsung display screen is planned to be mounted behind the existing window.
Wendy’s is the third-largest burger chain globally, following McDonald’s and Burger King, with approximately 6,700 outlets across 30 countries.
The chain previously exited the UK market in 1999 but announced its return in May 2021. Since then, it has opened restaurants in Reading, Stratford, and Oxford, with ambitions to establish around 400 locations throughout the UK.
The new Glasgow restaurant will occupy two floors, including a basement and ground level. The design plans include dining areas, order kiosks, drink stations, service points, as well as staff and storage rooms. The proposal aims to “honour the building’s historical identity while providing a modern dining experience.”
A decision on the planning application is expected by Friday, January 17.
