Taco Bell is ramping up its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) as part of its strategy to enhance drive-thru operations and improve scheduling practices. The fast-food chain’s parent company, Yum! Brands, reported a 4% year-over-year increase in same-store sales during the latest quarter, prompting this technological push.
According to Yum CFO Chris Turner, Taco Bell is expanding its drive-thru voice AI system, which is currently operational at 300 locations across the United States. Since launching the pilot program in early 2024, the system has successfully processed over 2 million orders. Additionally, the number of active loyalty members increased by 50% compared to the same period last year.
The AI technology aims to streamline the ordering process by allowing an AI assistant to take customer orders and communicate them to staff, thereby reducing employee workload and improving order accuracy. Turner noted that both customers and team members have responded positively to the new system, with employees appreciating the extra support it provides.
To facilitate this technology, Taco Bell has installed digital menu boards at more than 6,000 restaurants, with plans to make these a standard feature by 2025. Furthermore, Taco Bell is utilizing AI for labor scheduling at 5,000 U.S. locations, enhancing operational efficiency. Yum Brands intends to extend this AI solution to its other restaurant brands by next year.
Taco Bell’s initiative comes as other fast-food chains explore similar technologies. Wendy’s is testing voice AI for drive-thru orders, while McDonald’s recently halted its own AI pilot but remains open to future implementations.
This strategic move underscores Taco Bell’s commitment to innovation and technology as it seeks to improve both customer experience and operational efficiency in a competitive market.
