Popeyes to Open 60 New Restaurants in The Czech Republic

by Nick

Popeyes, the American fast-food chain known for its fried chicken, has announced plans to open 60 new restaurants in the Czech Republic by 2033. This expansion aims to strengthen its presence in Central Europe.

Currently, Popeyes operates three locations in Prague and the Central Bohemian Region, with additional branches set to open soon in Brno.

The chain’s first restaurant in the Czech Republic opened last year in Wenceslas Square. The company plans to establish new outlets in major regional cities, shopping centers, and along major highways.

Marko Blažević, Popeyes’ director for Central and Eastern Europe, explained that opening a new restaurant can take several months or even up to two years, especially when targeting prime locations.

Popeyes will face stiff competition from established fast-food chains in the Czech market. McDonald’s currently operates 124 restaurants in the country, while KFC has 128 locations. Other competitors include Burger King with 33 outlets and Pizza Hut with 16 locations.

New Entrants: Five Guys And Wendy’s

The fast-food landscape in Czechia is becoming more competitive as Five Guys prepares to open its first restaurant this autumn in the renovated Máj department store in Prague. Additionally, Wendy’s has announced plans to open its first Czech location soon.

Jan Kotrbáček, head of retail leasing for Central and Eastern Europe at Cushman & Wakefield, noted that the Czech fast-food sector still has room for growth. “The market for fast food in Czechia still offers opportunities, and international brands are performing exceptionally well,” he said.

Popeyes’ ambitious expansion comes as part of a broader strategy by Restaurant Brands International (RBI) and its partner McWin to grow their brands in Eastern Europe. Together, they plan to open a total of 600 new restaurants across Czechia, Poland, and Romania over the next decade.

With this expansion, Popeyes aims to introduce its unique New Orleans-style menu to more customers while competing effectively against established rivals.
