Somerset Council has approved plans for a new Starbucks cafe and drive-thru in Highbridge this month. The new outlet will be situated at Oaktree Business Park, near the recently opened McDonald’s restaurant.
The proposed Starbucks will cover 178 square meters and feature a modern cafe building with parking for 19 vehicles, including two electric vehicle charging stations. The drive-thru will be located south of Howdens kitchen supplies, which opened last year.
At the Somerset Council Planning Committee meeting, councillors granted permission for the project, pending a referral to the Secretary of State if National Highways does not withdraw its holding direction.
A report indicated that the expected traffic from the new Starbucks would be minimal, and concerns about potential congestion were addressed in discussions with National Highways.
Previously, the Axe Brue Internal Drainage Board had raised objections regarding drainage issues related to the proposed site. However, following additional information from the developers, the Board has agreed to remove its objection, provided certain conditions are met.
The application includes plans for a modern cafe and drive-thru similar to the Starbucks that opened at Dunball roundabout in 2023. The site is also close to a Costa Coffee drive-thru that opened in December 2021 and the adjacent Highbridge Travelodge hotel.
