This is not McDonald’s first venture into anime-themed promotions. The fast-food giant has previously collaborated with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for Happy Meal toys featuring popular characters.
McDonald’s has also partnered with Sanrio for Hello Kitty toys and had a crossover promotion between Hello Kitty and Yu-Gi-Oh! earlier this year. Recently, McDonald’s USA teamed up with the “Jujutsu Kaisen” series for a special line of black garlic dipping sauces inspired by characters like Satoru Gojo.
The Pretty Cure franchise continues to evolve after two decades. Toei Animation producer Takashi Washio has noted the series’ significant impact on the magical girl genre. Unlike traditional portrayals of female characters in anime, the original show featured heroines who fought using their strength rather than relying solely on magical powers—setting it apart from series like “Sailor Moon,” where characters often use magic in battle and focus on romantic interests. “Wonderful Pretty Cure!” can be streamed on Crunchyroll, along with other installments from the franchise.
