Burger King has announced the closure of its flagship restaurant on Pham Ngu Lao in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. This location, strategically situated near the busy Bui Vien pedestrian street, will officially close its doors on October 7. The company shared this news on its official Facebook page, stating, “All the fond memories at Burger King Pham Ngu Lao will officially come to an end.”
With this closure, Burger King will have only 10 stores remaining in Vietnam. However, the brand reassured customers that it plans to return in the future.
Reduced Presence in Vietnam
The Pham Ngu Lao location was one of Burger King’s key outlets in Vietnam. After its closure, the company will operate five stores each in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This marks a significant reduction from its initial expansion plans.
Burger King entered the Vietnamese market in 2012 through its local franchisee, Vietnam Food and Beverage Services Co., Ltd. The chain aimed for rapid growth by opening restaurants in prime locations to maximize visibility and accessibility.
The Pham Ngu Lao restaurant opened in 2013 and was expected to play a crucial role in Burger King’s growth strategy. It was located opposite 23/9 Park, just a short distance from Bui Vien Street and about 1 km from Ben Thanh Market.
Struggles with Expansion
Despite its strategic location, Burger King’s expansion did not go as planned. By early 2016, the chain had only opened 17 stores across Vietnam. The company faced challenges that led to the closure of four outlets, including two in Ho Chi Minh City and one each in Hanoi and Danang.
The closure of the Pham Ngu Lao store reflects a broader trend among American brands struggling to maintain their presence in prime locations within Ho Chi Minh City. The competitive real estate market and intense competition have prompted many companies to reassess their operations in Vietnam.
Other American Brands Follow Suit
Burger King’s struggles are not unique. Starbucks recently closed its flagship Reserve store on Han Thuyen Street, which was considered an iconic venue for the brand. Similarly, McDonald’s announced the closure of its Ben Thanh outlet, located just 700 meters from Burger King’s Pham Ngu Lao store. McDonald’s had initially planned to open 100 outlets nationwide but has only managed to establish just over one-third of that goal.
