The Cold Spring City Council has approved plans for a new McDonald’s restaurant, which will be built at the former Hardee’s location on 3rd Street South/Highway 23. City Administrator Kris Dockendorf shared that discussions for this project have been ongoing for nearly a year.
“We’ve been working with their architects and engineers for about nine or ten months, reviewing the site and our ordinances to ensure everything is viable,” he stated.
Dockendorf noted that most of the planning involved local stakeholders rather than representatives from McDonald’s Corporation.
He mentioned, “I didn’t speak with anyone from McDonald’s until last week at our planning commission meeting.”
A company official has projected that the new McDonald’s will open in fall 2025. The restaurant will cover nearly 5,000 square feet and will include drive-through and curbside pickup options. Some council members inquired about late-night hours, and they were informed that this could be possible if sales are strong enough.
Currently, the nearest McDonald’s locations are in St. Joseph and Waite Park.
