Beto O’Rourke & Douglas Emhoff Rally Support for Kamala Harris at Whataburger

by Nick

Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff is continuing his Texas tour with a stop in Houston as part of his efforts to support Vice President Kamala Harris.

Emhoff’s visit featured a notable moment with former Congressman Beto O’Rourke, who is known for his fondness for Whataburger. When Emhoff arrived in Texas for fundraising and rallies, O’Rourke suggested they visit the popular fast-food chain. The two enjoyed Double Meat Whataburgers with some modifications in Austin.

According to Texas Tribune reporter Jasper Scherer, O’Rourke reminisced about how Whataburger was a key stop during his 2018 Senate campaign and his 2022 gubernatorial run. The fast-food joint helped enhance O’Rourke’s relatability, especially compared to his opponent Ted Cruz, who has unique culinary preferences.

As Harris prepares to face former President Donald Trump in the upcoming November election, O’Rourke is actively supporting her campaign. The duo also visited Luck Ranch to greet country music legend Willie Nelson, who wore a Harris-Walz T-shirt in a post shared on Emhoff’s Instagram.

During his Texas visit, Emhoff raised over $1 million at a San Antonio fundraiser for Harris’s campaign, marking the largest presidential fundraiser in the city’s history. He is now headed to Houston for another event, just one week before Trump’s scheduled private fundraiser in the city.

Despite recent polls showing Trump leading Harris by five percentage points in Texas, Emhoff encouraged local Democrats to vote. “Even if we can’t turn Texas blue this time around, you have a good chance of sending [U.S. Rep.] Colin Allred to the Senate,” he stated during the San Antonio fundraiser.

On Tuesday, Emhoff expressed satisfaction with his efforts to support down-ballot candidates and enjoyed his time at Whataburger with O’Rourke. Notably, neither mentioned complaints about the quality of Whataburger since it was sold to a Chicago investment firm in 2019.

Emhoff’s engagement in Texas highlights the importance of energizing Democratic voters ahead of the election. With ongoing efforts to rally support for Harris and other Democratic candidates, both he and O’Rourke are optimistic about mobilizing voters in the Lone Star State.
