McDonald’s to Test Digital Ordering Stations

McDonald’s is set to introduce a series of digital ordering stations that will provide cashierless checkout options. These stations will allow customers to pay with cash and receive change, enabling them to skip the traditional register line.

Currently, McDonald’s locations feature self-order kiosks that accept credit card payments. However, customers paying with cash still need to wait for a cashier to complete their transactions. The new digital ordering stations aim to streamline this process and free up staff to focus on other tasks, such as handling curbside pickup orders.

The company confirmed the rollout of these new stations, stating that screens behind the counter will now display select menu items instead of the full menu. This change will encourage customers to order at the kiosks or through the McDonald’s mobile app. For those who prefer to order at the counter, full printed menus will still be available upon request.

“These changes allow franchisees to meet our customers’ increased desire for digital options while improving speed and accuracy,” a McDonald’s representative said.

The fast-food industry has increasingly embraced mobile ordering kiosks, especially during the pandemic. A report by PYMNTS found that many consumers prefer self-service options at quick-service restaurants. It revealed that 51% of grab-and-go customers believe using a self-service kiosk enhances their satisfaction, while 20% of dine-in customers feel the same way.

McDonald’s efforts come as unattended payment technologies become essential in today’s fast-paced retail environment. Ellie Smith, global head of digital acceptance at Discover Global Network, noted that technological advancements and consumer demand for self-service solutions are driving this trend. She emphasized that payment technology providers and merchants benefit from increased speed and better management of their workforce, creating a mutually advantageous situation.

As of now, the new digital ordering stations will be tested in a limited number of U.S. locations. McDonald’s has not yet announced a timeline for a broader rollout. The company reassured that cashiers will not be eliminated but will be reassigned to different roles, such as assisting with curbside pickups and enhancing customer experience.

The introduction of these digital ordering stations reflects McDonald’s commitment to improving service efficiency and meeting changing customer preferences in the fast-food landscape.
