Plans for Whataburger‘s new restaurant in East Cobb are facing yet another setback. The Texas-based chain requested a continuance from the Cobb Board of Commissioners on Tuesday to refine their site plan for the former O’Charley’s location at Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads.
According to Cobb Zoning Division manager John Pederson, the applicant sought a delay until the August 20 hearing to finalize architectural landscaping details. The Board unanimously approved this request, with Chairwoman Lisa Cupid absent. This marks the third delay for Whataburger’s proposal, which aims to replace the current structure with a new 7,000-square-foot building featuring drive-through facilities and adequate parking.
Initial reviews identified the need for additional parking, with stipulations in place regarding fast food and drive-through operations.
In a separate decision during the hearing, commissioners voted 4-0 to grant a special land-use permit to St. Andrew United Methodist Church. This allows the church to host a farmers market every Saturday on its property at Canton Road and Blackwell Circle. Operating from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. through September 28, the Blackwell Farmer Market will showcase local vendors offering fresh produce, meats, baked goods, and other artisanal foods in a designated section of the church’s parking lot.
The permit is valid for 24 months and follows a recommendation for approval from the Cobb Planning Commission.
