Thomas J. Mayfield, newly elected Alderman of Vicksburg’s Ward 1, has started his term by acknowledging the proactive efforts of local teenagers who opted to join the workforce instead of idling away their summer. In a commendation ceremony held at Vicksburg City Hall on Monday, Mayfield personally recognized Fabian Moore, Corderrion Valentine, Devin Banks, and Felton Moore for their responsible decision.

The initiative began when Corderrion Valentine’s mother, Shakayla Dixon, who manages the Burger King, invited her son to work. Recognizing the opportunity to keep themselves busy and earn money, Corderrion encouraged his friends and basketball teammates to join him.
Mayfield emphasized that their decision was driven by a desire to make a positive impact on their community, particularly amidst concerns about youth violence. Corderrion expressed his hope that their example would inspire other young people to follow suit and avoid trouble.
The story gained significant attention on social media after Shakayla Dixon shared it on Facebook, accumulating over 5,000 shares and 10,000 likes. It garnered further traction when Nick Cannon, a prominent comedian and TV host, shared it on Instagram, receiving nearly 100,000 likes and amplifying its impact.
Mayfield’s recognition of these teenagers underscores the importance of proactive youth engagement and responsible choices, setting a commendable example for their peers and the broader community.
