Residents of the Midlands can look forward to a new addition as Whataburger expands its presence in South Carolina. The popular fast-food chain is set to open a new location at 888 South Lake Drive in Lexington. Situated at the northwest corner of South Lake and Industrial Drives, just north of Interstate 20, the upcoming Whataburger will join other nearby businesses such as Circle K and OT gas stations, as well as the American Leadership Academy school.
According to planning and zoning documents from the Town of Lexington, the Whataburger project is currently underway, with construction already in progress as observed by a reporter on Monday morning.
Whataburger, founded in 1950 as a roadside burger stand in Corpus Christi, Texas, has grown to operate over 1,000 locations nationwide, as reported by data site ScrapeHero. In 2019, the Dobson family sold a majority stake in the company to Chicago-based investment firm BDT Capital, marking the beginning of an expansion initiative.
South Carolina is a focal point for Whataburger’s expansion efforts, with plans for new locations in Anderson, Greenville, and other areas. In addition to the South Lake Drive location in Lexington, construction is underway for at least two other Whataburger spots in the Midlands: at 1185 Dutch Fork Road in Irmo and on Bridgeberry Lane in northeast Columbia.
Known for its signature hamburgers, Whataburger also offers a variety of menu items including fries, chicken sandwiches, chicken strips, salads, and milkshakes, catering to a wide range of tastes.
