Although Pueblo’s first Whataburger hasn’t yet opened, a second restaurant could be coming in the near future after a rezoning plan won initial approval from the Pueblo Planning and Zoning Commission on March 12.
The newest Whataburger is planned for 4580 Dillon Drive, between Candlewood Suites and the Holiday Inn Express. The plans call for a 3,500-square-foot building on a .92-acre lot.
The area already draws plenty of traffic due to the Sam’s Club located across Dillon Drive from the proposed restaurant.
Traffic concerns likely will be alleviated by a roundabout planned for Eagleridge Boulevard and Dillon Drive, said Hannah Prinzi, planner.”I would really like to see a Whataburger at this site and it is not going to have a huge impact on this traffic corridor,” said Michael Cuppy of NorthStar Engineering, speaking on behalf of the applicant. The commission voted unanimously to recommend Pueblo City Council approve the rezoning from Planned Unit Development to business.
Colorado Owner William Tamminga and his crew broke ground on Pueblo’s first Whataburger last October at 2850 W.
Pueblo Blvd., right next to Lowes on Pueblo’s southside. Tamminga has opened seven other Whataburger restaurants in Colorado Springs and Monument since 2022.
Each restaurant is expected to employ a staff of about 100 workers.Dillon North Subdivision plans get initial OK
The commission also voted unanimously on March 12 to recommend city council approve rezoning and a special area plan for the Dillon North Subdivision located north of the Cesar Chavez and Dillon Drive intersection.Pueblo hotel developer Avik Amin of AKN Enterprises and Ron Childress of the Dillon Drive Association propose 11 lots on a 34-acre parcel to be sold for commercial development use.
The site originally was believed to be in the Fountain Creek flood plain, however, fill material has been brought to the site to elevate it, said Beritt Odom, principal planner.
