MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Whataburger, the popular Texas-based burger chain, is gearing up for its expansion into North Carolina, with plans for a new location in Mooresville.
According to zoning records, Whataburger has filed to operate a site at 604 River Highway, at the former O’Charley’s restaurant location. This will be the ninth confirmed Whataburger restaurant planned for North Carolina.
The expansion into the state began with a major announcement in January, which included a groundbreaking ceremony in Hickory. The company’s first location in Charlotte is expected to open by Summer 2025 on Albemarle Road, near Interstate 485. Other locations in Gastonia, Indian Land, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Winston-Salem are also in the works.
Whataburger’s plans for North Carolina date back to at least 2022, when zoning records first mentioned a potential site on South Boulevard. However, those plans were delayed, leaving Charlotte without the chance to try the famous burgers, including the chain’s signature fancy ketchup and patty melts.
Founded in 1950 in Texas, Whataburger has become a staple in the state, with over 700 locations. The chain has since expanded beyond Texas, with hundreds of locations across the country. South Carolina residents have already enjoyed Whataburger’s burgers, with restaurants in Columbia, Greenville, and Spartanburg.
It’s important to note that this Whataburger is unrelated to the local What-A-Burger restaurants found in Concord, Kannapolis, and Mooresville.
