McDonald’s Hong Kong is distributing over HK$10 million in bonuses to its employees in celebration of both the Lunar New Year and the company’s 50th anniversary, according to reports.
Each employee will receive HK$1,000 in red packets, or “Lai see,” as a festive gift, as reported by The Standard.
Randy Lai Wai-sze, the CEO of McDonald’s Hong Kong, confirmed that the bonuses will be distributed to staff members on continuous contracts, store managers, office employees, and the company’s management team.
Additionally, McDonald’s Hong Kong will begin offering salary increases starting this month, with amounts determined by individual work performance.
These bonuses and salary hikes come as the city prepares to celebrate the Lunar New Year on January 29, alongside McDonald’s Hong Kong marking its 50th year in the region.
Bonuses are typically provided to employees as a reward for their efforts and to commemorate significant milestones, according to job platform Indeed.
Research by Standard Chartered Bank Ltd. revealed that nearly 60% of employees in Hong Kong expect a year-end bonus, with 44% hoping for a bonus equal to or greater than one month’s salary.
Further data from the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management found that 37.2% of companies offer guaranteed bonus schemes, while 83.9% plan to give out non-guaranteed bonuses.
