Carl’s Jr. to Open First UK Location in Cardiff

by Nick

American burger chain Carl’s Jr. is expanding into the UK and the Republic of Ireland through a new franchise deal with Boparan Restaurant Group. The first UK location will open in Cardiff at the St David’s Shopping Centre in April, marking the brand’s entry into the market.

The Californian-based chain, which has been in operation since 1941, has partnered with Boparan Restaurant Group to grow its presence across both countries. The Cardiff restaurant will create approximately 40 jobs and will have seating for 50 customers.

David Moffat, Carl’s Jr. country manager for the UK, told The Caterer that the brand is known for offering high-quality, flavorful burgers that stand out in a competitive market. He added that the UK rollout will bring a “West Coast vibe” adapted to local tastes. Globally, Carl’s Jr. operates more than 4,000 locations, either directly or under franchise agreements.

Carl’s Jr. was founded by Carl and Margaret Karcher in the 1950s after the couple invested their savings to buy a hot dog cart in Anaheim, California, before opening their first restaurant.
