Shake Shack, a fast-food chain that rivals McDonald’s in popularity, has revealed plans to significantly expand its reach by more than 350%.
As of the end of fiscal year 2024, Shake Shack operated 329 locations. The company now aims to increase that number to at least 1,500 locations over the long term, according to a Monday announcement.
The company noted that its existing locations have shown “marked improvement” in profitability, but expressed optimism about future growth potential. Shake Shack believes that it is just beginning its expansion journey, with more room for growth ahead.
Founded two decades ago, Shake Shack initially set a long-term target of 450 locations. The new goal of 1,500 locations more than doubles that original target.
Headquartered in New York City, the company plans to focus on expanding in 20 key markets while also growing in existing regions.
“We believe our guidance for 2025 and the outlook for the next three years represents some of the highest growth in the restaurant industry,” said Shake Shack CFO Katie Fogertey, as reported by Fox Business. “We are investing and executing against our robust long-term opportunities ahead.”
The company has projected total revenue of $1.45 to $1.48 billion for fiscal year 2025 and expects a revenue growth rate in the “low-teens percentage” over the next three years.
Shake Shack’s success is largely driven by its signature ShackBurger—an Angus beef cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, and ShackSauce on a toasted potato bun. The chain is also known for seasonal menu items like the Black Truffle Burger with Gruyere cheese, black truffle sauce, and crispy sweet onion, as well as its premium shakes and frozen custard made in-house daily.
In addition to its U.S. locations, Shake Shack operates more than 200 restaurants internationally.
The announcement of Shake Shack’s ambitious expansion comes as many other fast-food chains, including McDonald’s, are scaling back. Last week, McDonald’s revealed it would be closing three of its six beverage-focused CosMc’s stores in Texas.
