McDonald’s has announced that three of its CosMc’s locations in Texas will close, just over a year after the new “small-format, beverage-led” concept was introduced in the U.S. This decision comes as McDonald’s also plans to open two more CosMc’s locations in Texas later this year.
The closures involve three CosMc’s outlets that were previously larger McDonald’s locations that underwent remodeling to fit the new format.
Since debuting in Bolingbrook, Illinois, CosMc’s has expanded to a total of seven locations, six of which are in Texas.
McDonald’s has been testing different store sizes and configurations, including revamping larger spaces and developing smaller prototypes designed to focus more on drive-thru service and digital interactions. The company has found that smaller formats help them test unique concepts that align with customer preferences.
The two new Texas stores will be part of this smaller store concept. CosMc’s offers a variety of beverages, including Island Pick Me Up Punch, Churro Cold Brew Frappe, and Sour Energy Burst, along with both sweet and savory food items. McDonald’s has reported significant sales of its McPops, which have become popular at the locations.
McDonald’s stated that while they are still in the early stages of learning from the CosMc’s concept, they plan to continue testing and expanding the concept in the future. CosMc’s adds to McDonald’s already massive U.S. presence, which includes around 13,500 traditional fast-food restaurants.
