McDonald’s is set to close several of its newly launched CosMc’s locations in 2025, but with a strategic twist.
In December 2023, during an earnings call, McDonald’s unveiled CosMc’s, a smaller-format restaurant with a space-themed concept. The first location opened in Illinois, marking the beginning of the brand’s exploration into a new restaurant model.
CosMc’s features a café-style setting, offering an array of beverages such as coffee, frappés, iced teas, lemonades, and energy drinks. The menu also includes breakfast staples like McMuffins, along with specialty sandwiches, baked goods, snacks, and soft-serve ice cream.
The announcement of the new concept quickly gained attention across social media, making the launch a viral success.
Long lines formed at the first location, with some fans even traveling internationally to experience CosMc’s firsthand.
“People lined up for hours, with some fans even flying in from the UK and France to experience CosMc’s,” McDonald’s said in a press release.
Building on this success, McDonald’s opened seven CosMc’s locations nationwide—one in Illinois and six in Texas. However, McDonald’s has now revealed plans to close three of the larger-format CosMc’s locations to focus on smaller stores.
In a statement on its website, McDonald’s explained that the company had been testing various location sizes and layouts to identify the best fit for the new concept. After a year of testing, the company decided to close the three locations that had been remodeled from traditional McDonald’s restaurants. This move aims to prioritize smaller-format stores, which McDonald’s believes will help the concept grow and eventually expand to other states.
Despite the closures, McDonald’s is moving forward with its plans to open two new CosMc’s locations in Texas, focusing on the smaller-format model. The company has not disclosed the exact cities for the new stores but has indicated that the Allen, Texas, location will be opening soon.
In addition to expanding the number of locations, McDonald’s has been reviewing customer feedback on the menu and is considering adding new food and beverage items to enhance the CosMc’s experience.
“CosMc’s customers have responded positively to the menu and embraced the bold flavors!” McDonald’s stated.
This testing phase has allowed the company to refine its concept and better understand which elements resonate with customers, paving the way for future expansions.
