Portillo’s is continuing its Texas expansion with plans to open a new location in New Braunfels later this year, marking the second in South Texas. The popular Chicago-based chain, known for its hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches, is making significant strides in the region.
The New Braunfels restaurant will follow the opening of a Portillo’s in Schertz, located just 30 minutes northeast of San Antonio, which was announced in November. Additionally, the company revealed plans for three more locations in the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth areas, including two small-format models.
Although Portillo’s has not disclosed specific details about the New Braunfels location, a company representative confirmed the development to the San Antonio Express-News.
Situated at FM 306 and Sophie Lane, the new fast-food restaurant is projected to cost $6 million to build and is expected to be completed by September 2025. The New Braunfels location will span 6,250 square feet, significantly smaller than Portillo’s usual 8,000-square-foot restaurants. Dubbed a “Restaurant of the Future,” the new design aims to reduce construction costs while maintaining the brand’s iconic service model.
Portillo’s, which operates 86 locations nationwide, went public in 2021 after a decade of ownership by private investment firm Berkshire Partners. The Chicago street-food chain is focused on long-term growth, with plans to open a total of 920 restaurants in the coming years, including several across Texas.
