Wendy’s has announced the permanent closure of 13 locations across Michigan, leaving both loyal customers and the fast-food industry in shock. While the chain is known for its competitive prices and iconic square burgers, the closures reflect broader struggles within the service industry, which have seen both major chains and local establishments in Michigan facing tough times.
Wendy’s, founded by Dave Thomas, has deep roots in Michigan. Thomas, who spent part of his childhood in Kalamazoo, famously recalled visiting the local Kewpee Hamburgers for their square burgers and milkshakes, which later became central to the Wendy’s menu. Despite this local connection, Wendy’s is now cutting its footprint in Michigan as part of a nationwide effort to close down outdated locations.
According to Fast Company, Wendy’s plans to shut down a total of 140 locations across the country. The company’s president and CEO, Kirk Tanner, stated that the closures are part of a broader strategy to replace older units with new, more strategically placed restaurants designed to boost sales. Tanner further emphasized that the closures in 2024, including those in the fourth quarter, will be balanced out by new openings this year.
In Michigan, the affected stores include:
- Coldwater
- Adrian (644 S. Main Street)
- Belleville (11000 Belleville Rd)
- Brighton (9370 Lee Rd)
- Dimondale
- Ionia
- Harper Hospital in Detroit
- Lansing (2727 Eaton Rapids Rd, 3920 West Saginaw)
- Novi
- Plymouth
- Schoolcraft
- Tecumseh
- Ypsilanti (2735 Washtenaw Ave)
The closures come as part of Wendy’s larger strategy to modernize its operations and revitalize its locations for improved customer experiences and increased sales potential. While these Michigan stores are closing, the company remains optimistic about its long-term growth, with new restaurants slated to open later this year.
