Wendy’s is preparing to open a new fast-food restaurant in Newcastle’s Bigg Market as part of its ambitious plan to establish 400 locations across the UK.
The American chain has begun putting up signs at the former KFC site, which has remained vacant for several years. The new restaurant will be located next to club Filthy’s and across from Greggs, with signs indicating it will be “Opening Soon.”
Planning documents submitted to Newcastle City Council earlier this year reveal that the restaurant will operate from 7 AM to 11 PM and is expected to create approximately 40 jobs, including 20 full-time positions. The venue will also feature seating for 18 customers.
Wendy’s first ventured into the North East by opening a store in Middlesbrough in May. Currently, the chain operates 30 locations across the UK and over 6,000 in the United States. Michael Clarke, UK Managing Director for Wendy’s, expressed excitement about the expansion, stating, “With more than 30 restaurants already open, these plans reflect our ambition to expand to 400 locations nationwide, enabling more people to enjoy our food.”
The menu at Wendy’s includes a variety of items such as burgers, chicken sandwiches, wraps, salads, and breakfast options.
The chain made its return to the UK market in 2021 after a two-decade absence, launching its first locations in Liverpool and Portsmouth.
As part of its growth strategy, Wendy’s aims to create over 400 jobs throughout its expansion in the UK. New restaurants are also set to open in cities including Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Sheffield, London, Southend-on-Sea, Colchester, and Cambridge.
