Taco Bell is bringing back original menu items from its first location in Southern California this week, along with other beloved dishes from its history. On October 31, the fast-food chain will launch the “Decades Menu,” featuring favorites from five decades of Taco Bell.
Starting Thursday, customers can enjoy the ’60s Tostada, ’70s Green Sauce Burrito, ’80s Meximelt, and ’90s Gordita Supreme at locations nationwide. The ’00s Caramel Apple Empanada will be added on November 21. The ’60s Tostada, which features a corn tostada shell topped with refried beans, red sauce, lettuce, and shredded cheese, pays homage to Taco Bell’s original location in Downey, California, which opened in 1962 with only six items on its menu. The ’70s Green Sauce Burrito includes refried beans, crunchy onions, shredded cheddar cheese, and spicy green sauce—described as “as edgy as the 1970s.”
The ’80s Meximelt, one of Taco Bell’s most requested items, contains beef, melted cheese, and pico de gallo, while the ’90s Gordita Supreme features a flatbread filled with beef, sour cream, lettuce, cheese, and diced tomatoes. All items will be available for a limited time.
Taco Bell first introduced the Decades Menu in August at three Southern California locations, but now it will be accessible to customers across the country. In addition to the menu items, Taco Bell is also selling retro-inspired hoodies and cups adorned with designs from previous decades.
Many fast-food chains have recently tapped into nostalgia as a marketing strategy. For example, McDonald’s has revived its mascot Grimace, while Wendy’s has paid tribute to its iconic “Where’s the Beef” advertisement. Taco Bell has a history of reintroducing nostalgic menu items, including the 1990s Volcano Menu and the 1970s Enchirito.
