TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pizza Hut Taiwan has unveiled a new limited-edition pizza that features coriander and traditional Taiwanese rougeng, available starting Tuesday, September 24.
This special pizza will be sold nationwide until October 7, with only 5,000 pizzas available.
The pizza boasts a chewy San Francisco-style crust topped with tender rougeng, crispy garlic, and a unique rougeng sauce that captures the authentic flavors of Yilan. Fresh coriander adds a vibrant touch, balancing the rich meat and cheese flavors.
Rougeng is a thick meatball broth that is a classic Taiwanese dish. It was commonly enjoyed by laborers alongside luroufan after long workdays, according to New Immigrants in Taiwan. This dish provided warmth and comfort, eventually becoming a popular snack throughout Taiwan.
While rougeng is available across the country, different regions have developed their own distinct flavors and textures. Yilan is particularly known for its garlic-flavored rougeng made from pork shoulder. The pork is marinated in a secret blend of spices, coated in potato starch and fish paste, then blanched in boiling water. The broth is created by simmering the blanching liquid with garlic, bamboo shoots, and other vegetables, finished with black vinegar and crispy fried garlic.
The new pizza is priced at NT$399 (approximately US$12.60) for a single order. A take-out buy-one-get-one-free offer costs NT$780. For an additional NT$39, customers can add extra coriander to their pizzas.
