McDonald’s is making a significant change to its McFlurry packaging by replacing plastic lids with a new four-flap paper cup. This move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability and reduce single-use plastics.
Last month, McDonald’s launched a Mini McFlurry aimed at customers looking for smaller portion sizes. Along with this new product, the company announced the shift to a more environmentally friendly paper-based cup for both Mini and Regular McFlurries. The new packaging aligns with McDonald’s goal of sourcing 100% of its primary guest packaging from renewable, recycled, or certified materials by the end of 2025. As of the end of 2023, McDonald’s reported that it had achieved nearly 87% of this goal.
Michael Gonda, McDonald’s Senior Vice President and Chief Impact Officer for North America, emphasized the importance of this packaging update. He stated, “Not only is this a fun new way for our U.S. fans to enjoy the McFlurry, but we’re also moving one step closer to fulfilling our packaging and waste commitments.”
This change follows another sustainability initiative from McDonald’s.
Late last year, the company replaced the dual-purpose mixing spindle and spoon with a more durable, washable spindle for McFlurry preparation. Customers now receive a small black spoon similar to those used for other ice cream products.
McDonald’s noted that these small changes can lead to significant reductions in plastic waste, especially given the large volume of products it sells. The four-flap paper cups are already being used in several international markets, including Canada and Indonesia.
Overall, McDonald’s continues to focus on sustainability, aiming to minimize its environmental impact through innovative packaging solutions.
